Kumasi, Oct. 22, GNA - Mr Baron Amoafo, Deputy Chairman of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has urged students to be more conversant with the 1992 Constitution in order to be alive to their civil rights and responsibilities.

He said it was important for the citizenry to accept to protect the Constitution from all forms of abuse and that they could do this only when they better understood what it contained.

"It should not be lost on us that awareness of the basic law of the land would go a long way to teach the way we conduct ourselves and thereby enhance our democratic society," he added.

Mr Amoafo was addressing an Annual Inter-Schools Civic Education Contest held at the Kumasi Anglican Senior High School on Thursday.

12 senior high schools participated in the programme that was organized by the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP).

They are Mankranso, Wesley Girls, T.I. Amass-Asokore, Jachie-Pramso, Agona Seventh Day Adventist, Ejisuman, Ejuraman Anglican, Jacobu, Prince of Peace (POP) Girls, Maabang, Offinso Dwamena Akenten and Dompoase.

Mr Amoafo said by assisting students to develop interest in the study of the Constitution, the Commission was ensuring the survival and promotion of the nation's democracy.

He said the contest should be seen as a critical factor in the well being of the youth and the nation's socio-economic development.

He underscored the need for national unity and advised the students to shun negative acts likely to impede their progress.

Mr Joseph Onyinah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, in a message read on his behalf, reminded students of their responsibility towards the maintenance of peace, stability, progress and development in the society.

He lauded the NCCE for initiating such a competition and pledged that the Ghana Education Service would continue to support the initiative.

Prince of Peace Girls won the competition with 30 points. Agona SDA came second with 27 points, whilst Wesley Girls took the third place with 24 points.

All the participating schools received T-shirts, copies of the 1992 Constitution and two constitutional game boards.
