Teacher Defiles Great Granddaughter

JAMES KOFI Nyame, 51-year-old teacher who allegedly let loose his libido on his one-and-half-year old great granddaughter at Menang, near New Edubiase in the Ashanti Region, has been placed in prison custody, awaiting further investigations.

During the early hours of October 17, 2009, the accused person, who was bent on proving his virility, reportedly took advantage of the victim's mother's absence and had sexual intercourse with her, after the baby was left under his care by the mother to attend to nature's call.

Realizing the baby was bleeding profusely, the accused, a teacher at Menang D/A Junior High School (JHS), quickly ran out and bought paracetamol syrup and blood tonic for the victim.

He was remanded into prison custody by an Obuasi Circuit Court after pleading not guilty to the charge of defilement, contrary to section 101 of Act 29/60, as amended by Act 554/98, and would re-appear on November 2, 2009 to face trial.

Opening prosecution, Police Chief Inspector Mohammed Agumah informed the court presided by Gilbert Ayisi Addo that on Friday, October 16 this year, the baby's mother, who is the accused person's granddaughter, visited him at Menang.

According to prosecution, around 5:30 am the next day, the complainant informed the accused person that she was going to the lavatory and therefore left her one and half-year-old baby under his care.

Chief Agumah continued that Kofi Nyame then took advantage of the mother's absence and soon after inserted his large penis into the baby's little vagina and began to have sexual intercourse with her.

On her return, the complainant, a hairdresser by profession, met her baby screaming in tears, as the accused person carried her on his thigh and tried to console her, prosecution stated further.

The mother took the baby and upon examination discovered that blood was oozing out from her, the police prosecutor disclosed.

He added that the complainant immediately confronted her grandfather, who pleaded with her not to tell anyone about the incident so as not to get arrested and imprisoned subsequently.

Chief Agumah said the accused person quickly went out and bought paracetamol syrup and blood tonic which he gave to the baby.

A report was however made to the police and the baby was sent to the hospital for treatment after a medical form was issued.

The accused was later arrested upon identification on October 19. Nyame was subsequently charged with the offence of defilement and arraigned after police investigation, Chief Inspector Agumah concluded.
