UNIVERSITY of Cape Coast (UCC) admitted 1,301 females out of 3,829 undergraduate students this year, representing a 2 per cent increase over the number admitted last year.
The university was however able to offer admission to only 4,251 applicants out of 11,730 applications received from qualified candidates.
This was revealed by the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the university, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku- Agyeman, during the matriculation for new students over the weekend.
Prof. Agyeman, the first female VC in the country added 378 applicants also gained admission to undertake post graduate courses with 30.7 per cent being women.
She noted UCC aims to reach its students with the objective of making them holistic individuals capable of upholding reason at all times, imbued with analytical minds that examine issues critically and offer the best rational alternatives.
She reminded students to always bear in mind the purpose of coming to UCC and respect its rules and regulations to make their stay on campus more profitable and comfortable or else they will be expelled.
Prof Agyeman charged students to shy away from cyber fraud, drug abuse, robberies and other petty thefts adding that the university will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to deal drastically with those found culpable.
The UCC, she disclosed was expanding its distance education programme to enable those who cannot be on campus for their studies to upgrade their knowledge and skills and help to address the shortfall of qualified teachers in the country. She appealed to government to continue to support UCC in making its sciences and agriculture programmes continually accessible to many since it is the only institute in the country responding to the national quest to increase admission of science students.
