The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has called for the introduction of the study of the ideas and vision of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, into the school curriculum from the basic to the tertiary level.
He explained that the ideas and vision of Dr Kwame Nkrumah were still relevant to the development of Ghana and Africa in general, 50 years after he pronounced them, and stressed that those ideas could serve as the basis for the future development of the Africa.
Mr Ampofo was speaking at the signing ceremony of the One Ghana Unity Flag, at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
The flag is parading the regional capitals as part of activities to mark the Centenary birth of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The flag, which had travelled across seven regions, was expected to arrive in Accra today, September 21, the exact birthday of Dr Nkrumah.
Mr Ampofo called on the young generation to let the anniversary unite them and advised them to stop the unneccessary fighting since what the country needed was the defeat of hunger, poverty, illiteracy and ignorance.
Dr Abu Sakara, the running mate of the presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in the 2008 presidential elections, said the centenary celebration highlighted the fact that Ghana was born out of unity.
He thanked President John Evans Atta Mills for honouring Dr Nkrumah in his own country and noted that in most cases, heroes like Dr Nkrumah were not recognised in their own countries.
Dr Sakara said Dr Nkrumah’s vision for African unity would make the continent’s presence be felt among the commity of nations. —
