The Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Sumani Nayina, has directed all the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to adopt tree planting as one of their major developmental agenda, to forestall the ever growing desertification threatening the future of the area.
At least, each district assembly should grow two acres of trees each year to multiply the existing plantations.
Mr. Nayina made the call at this year's northern regional celebration of the World Environment Day held at Kumbungu under the auspices of the regional Environmental Protection Agency.
The Regional Minister also underscored the need for all district assemblies in the region, to collaborate with other development partners to continue to sensitise people on climate change and other environmental issues in their areas.
This, Stephen Nayina said, would go a long way to mitigate the impacts of climate change, and also help in managing the environment and other natural resources the region has been endowed with.
He commended the traditional authority for actively participating in the fight against environmental degradation, and thereby urged them to partner with the district assemblies to preserve the environment.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, “Your planet needs you, unite to combat climate change,” Mr. Abu Iddrisu, Northern Regional Director of Environmental Protection Agency, appealed to Ghanaians to cultivate the habit of fighting against behavioural changes that trigger climate change.
He challenged citizens of the entire northern region to take a cursory look at the devastating effects of climate change, which recently threatened food security in the area as a result of erratic rainfall patterns.
Mr. Abu Iddrisu regretted that about 40% of Ghana's total land mass had experienced some of the worst forms of environmental degradation, and attributed its root cause to the indiscriminate felling of trees.
He therefore reiterated the need for citizens of Ghana to encourage the habit of tree planting at the community, farm and individual levels, to decrease environmental temperatures which in his estimation would minimise the threats of climate change.
Mr. Iddi Manza Mahama, District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tolon Kumbungu, pledged the assembly's preparedness to collaborate with the traditional authority, land owners and other civil society organisations to demarcate large tracks of land for natural conservation.
