Ghanaian Gets Top Varsity Post

A ghanaian, Dr E. Obiri Addo, has been appointed acting Director of the Pan-African Studies Programme at Drew University, Madison, New Jersey.

Dr Addo, who is Associate Professor of African Studies and Religious Studies, takes over from Dr. Lillie J. Edwards, Professor of History and African-American Studies, who will be on academic leave effective July 1, 2009.

The Pan-African Studies Programme at Drew, University, is an interdisciplinary programme that incorporates courses and faculty from throughout the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and fine arts. 

The programme provides a forum for studying the history, culture, politics and socio-economic structures among Europeans, Asians, Native Americans, and peoples of African descent.

It offers major and minor degrees at the College of Liberal Arts.

Professor Addo began his education at Dedeso in the Afram Plains.  He obtained the G.C.E Ordinary and Advanced Levels at Abetifi Presbyterian and Apam Secondary School respectively.

He went on to Trinity College, Legon, and then to the University of Ghana where he obtained a B.A (Honors) degree in English Literature and the Study of Religions.  He did graduate work at Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, NJ, where he was awarded the M.A degree in Theological Studies.

Dr Addo received the Master of Philosophy and doctorate degrees in Religion and Society from the Casperson School of Graduate Studies at Drew University.  He has been a Fellow at the Princeton University's African and African Studies programme, and also at the Centre for the Study of Religions.

Dr Addo has been on the faculty at Drew since 1995, and has taught at Bates College, Maine, and Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

He has a passion for international education, and has led Study Abroad seminars for Drew University and other U.S. institutions to Ghana, Benin, Burkina Faso, Eritrea, and South Africa.  He was the first director of Drew University's semester at the University of Ghana, Legon.

He is the author of Kwame Nkrumah: A Case Study of Religion and Politics in Ghana, and co-author of Teacher's Guide: Things Fall Apart.
