Sekondi June 30, GNA - The Friends of the Nation (FoN), a non-governmental organisation, and the Ngyeresia Community, a slum and fishing community near Sekondi, have signed memorandum of understanding to work together to enhance the living standards of the community and the inhabitants over a period of six months.

Mr Donkris Mevuta, Executive Director of FoN and Miss Rita Yawson, assemblywoman for the area, signed the agreement for their respective entities.

Mr Mevuta said at the signing ceremony that projects earmarked included the construction of a water kiosk and 10 household latrines.

FoN would provide an initial start up fund covering 70 per cent of the cost of constructing the water kiosk and the household latrines, while the community provides upfront the 30 per cent left for the water kiosk.

For the latrines, the community would mobilize beneficiaries of the household latrines to contribute upfront 30 per cent of the cost of construction either in cash or in kind.

Mr Mevuta said the community would ensure repayment of the 70 per cent start up fund provided by the FoN.

There would be sanitation educational forums to educate residents on effective and sustainable waste disposal strategies for cleaner environment.

The project is themed, "Improved Services for Clean and Safe Environment-Ngyeresia Community.” It starts from June and would be end in November.

It would enable the community to be responsible for its own development to reduce poverty and to improve their living conditions.

Mr Mevuta said the residents would also dialogue with stakeholders on improving drainage systems and the relocation of the fecal matter disposal site in the community.

Additionally, door-to-door refuse collection groups would be formed in collaboration with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
