A-G defends proposed code of conduct for state prosecutors

The Attorney-General has defended her proposal for the introduction of a code of conduct for state prosecutors.

The A-G says the code will set an objective standard that will prevent the abuse of a prosecutor's discretion and check the violation of the rights of remand prisoners.

The proposed code will also be designed to insulate state prosecutors from political interference especially in deciding which cases to pursue.

But human rights activists are questioning the need for a code of conduct when there are already clear laws covering all the issues the code seeks to deal with.

Critics say the laws should rather be enforced. The head of the Legal Resources Centre has raised an objection to the proposed code saying it is unnecessary.
