A section of the youth in the Okaikoi North Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has questioned the competence of Mrs. Elizabeth Sackey, who is the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area.
They have consequently branded her as a non performing parliamentarian and have vowed to vote her out in the 2012 general election.
According to the irate youth, the MP has been dormant and ahs since not been championing their interest on the floor of parliament.
They also claimed, among other things, they hardly see their MP on television stations talking on their behalf, and this they explained has contributed to the lack of developmental projects to the constituency.
The Secretary of the Lapaz Youth Club, Richard Asamoah, in an interview with Ghanaian Journal over the weekend bluntly said the group was preparing to engage the Mrs. Sackey in a debate to account for her stewardship and what she has been able to achieve in the constituency with her share of the MP's common fund.
“We are more than prepared to meet this woman (Hon. Sackey) for her to show us what she has been able to do so far. Some of us at times feel embarrassed about the way and manner she conducts her self in the House. It obvious she has got nothing to offer to her constituents,” he stressed.
He pointed out that never has the MP asked a question in Parliament to draw the government's attention to the numerous problems confronting the area adding that “she is more of a liability to the constituency.”
He further admitted that majority of his members who are card bearing members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) would resist any attempt by the Constituency executives to give her another opportunity in 2012.
“If they allow this woman to contest on the ticket of the NPP in 2012 then they should be ready to receive our protests,” Mr Asamoah warned. He advised the NPP executives in the Constituency to be very careful when electing the next parliamentary candidate to represent the party in constituency.
Although Mrs. Sackey managed to win the sit for the NPP in last year's election, similar complaints from members of the constituency led to a significant drop in the number votes polled by the NPP in last year's presidential and parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile, efforts by the Ghanaian Journal to reach Hon. Elizabeth Sackey for her comments on the allegations proved abortive as several calls to her cell phone were unanswered.
