The Kassena-Nankana District Assembly is assisting over 600 youth who have ventured into agricultural production during the current cropping season.

They are being provided with a number of facilities including land preparation, seeds, fertiliser and weedicides to undertake the cultivation of 700 hectares of rice and 500 hectares of maize at the Kologo-Naga Valleys.

Mr Emmanuel Andema, the Kassena-Nankawa District Chief Executive, announced this here contending that the assembly's assistance live with government's policy.

He said the assembly had acquired 10 tractors which were providing land preparation services to both the youth and other farmers in the district at subsidised cost.

He said whereas commercial tractor owners hired tractors for a fee, of between GH¢30 and GH¢40 per hectare, the assembly charges GH¢18 besides providing the farmer with the subsidised farm inputs.

The cost of production, he said will be recovered after harvest with the farmer taking what was left.

Mr Andema said the assembly had decided that after harvest the produce will be sold to the School Feeding Programme to feed children in the district.

Mr Emmanuel Alorigiya, Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture in the district, stated that public education had been intensified to encourage the youth to undertake dry season cultivation of maize instead of drifting to Southern Ghana for non-existent jobs.

He pointed out that dry season maize farming was more lucrative than rain-fed farming because of the high demand for fresh corn during the lean season.

Happy to hear that the authorities are investing in the youth of kassena nankana district. The shortage of food will be a major issue in the world. Investment in the youth is empowering them to understand responsibility. Let us hope that these promises are followed up until results are acheived.
