MTN organises malaria sensitization programme

Assakai (W/R), June 12, GNA - The Multimedia Telecommunication Network (MTN), on Thursday, organised malaria sensitization programmes at Assakai and Adentem in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis in support of the National Malaria Programme.

Speaking at the programmes, Mr. Samuel Appiah, Senior Manager of the company, in-charge of the Western and Central regions, said the sensitization programmes formed part of the third edition of "MTN's 21 Days of Y'ello Care," an annual community care programme for the company's areas of operation.

He said the annual community care programme was to encourage the company's staff and partners to volunteer their services in supporting community upliftment activities.

Mr. Appiah said the MTN was participating in the national malaria awareness effort because the disease was the number one killer disease in the country and other parts of Africa.

He said people including children are the country's human resources and their health needs must be met to enable them to participate in national development.

Miss Alberta Barwuah, a Senior Public Health Nurse at Kwesimintim, advised the people to assist to reduce the incidence of the disease by keeping their surroundings clean and observing good personal hygiene.

She urged to desist from littering the environment with empty tins particularly, during the raining season, to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes, the carriers of the malaria parasite.

They should also weed bushy areas and clear stagnant waters near their homes to stop the transmission of the disease, she said, adding that all malaria cases should be referred to health facilities for treatment.

The MTN gave out about 500 mosquito-treated nets to people in the two communities after the programmes.
