Ben Southall A LUCKY Brit has won the race to get the so-called 'best job in the world' and be named caretaker of the Great Barrier Reef islands.

Charity fundraiser Ben Southall, 34, beat more than 34,000 applicants from around the world to be offered the role Down Under.

He said: “We have had probably the most incredible three or four days of our lives so far.

“Just getting involved in the media, all the activities has been an incredible challenge, it has been very testing.

“To go away now as the island caretaker for Tourism Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef is an extreme honour.

“I hope I can fill the boots as much as everybody is expecting, my swimming, hopefully, is up to standard.

“I look forward to all the new roles and responsibilities that the task involves.”

Speaking from Hamilton Island, where Ben will take up his new position, Queensland's Premier Anna Bligh said today:

"The best job in the world campaign has had people from all corners of the globe talking since its launch in January and has become arguably the most sought-after job in the world."
