Protect Rights, Freedom Of Persons Equally

The Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Alhaji Hamidu has reminded Police personnel to protect the rights and freedoms of all persons equally, irrespective of their standing in society. He told them that democratic policing, which he explained to mean equal treatment for both the rich and poor was the order of the day, stressing that “the fundamental yardstick of a responsible police service is a service whose members have deep respect for human rights and do not trample on the rights and freedoms of individuals in the society.”

DCOP Mahama made these remarks in an address at the passing-out ceremony of 212 police recruits, comprising 22 females and 190 males at the Regional Police Training School at Pwalugu, near Bolgatanga last Friday.

The Regional Police Commander said the public had become critical and were demanding for a Police Service that was efficient, effective, incorruptible, accountable and above all responsive to societal aspirations.

He cautioned the recruits not to forget that the service has no room to accommodate personnel with unscrupulous characters and that anybody found exhibiting unprofessional conduct would be shown the exit.

DCOP Alhaji Mahama re-assured the general public to feel free to volunteer any valuable information about criminals to the police and also expose police officers who indulged in unprofessional and corrupt activities.

Mr Clemen Yamoah was adjudged the over-all best recruit, whilst Messrs Martin Karikari, Benjamin Achaningah, Wilson Appiagyei-Afrifa, Bright Konadu Boateng and Ms Paulina Dwumfour were adjudged the best in academic work, marksman, drill,  physical training and conduct, respectively.

The Regional Minister, Mr Mark Woyongo and Mrs Vivian Anafo, the District Chief Executive for Talensi-Nabdam district were among the important dignitaries at the ceremony.
