The British Minister of State in charge of the Foreign Office, Mr Mark Malloch-Brown, has hailed the election of Prof John Evans Atta Mills as President of Ghana.

“I congratulate Professor John Atta Mills on his victory in the Ghanaian presidential elections and welcome the conclusion of the electoral process,” he said.

A statement issued in Accra said although the elections were close and hard fought, they had shown that Ghana's democratic institutions and electoral processes are solid.

It said Ghana's elections represented a success for democracy across the region, and an example to Africa and the world.

“They are, above all, a tribute to the good sense of the Ghanaian people and the good work of the Electoral Commission.  The closeness of the election reinforces the importance of both government and opposition working together to assure the peace and development of the country,” it said.

The statement said the new government would face a number of challenges, including pressing forward with the economic development of the country and contributing to peace in the region, while enhancing Ghana's deserved reputation for good governance and the respect of human rights.

“We look forward to working in partnership with all Ghanaians as we have in the past to tackle these challenges,” it said.
