A Ground-Breaking event involving President John Agyekum Kufuor and President-elect Prof. John Evans Atta Mills was yesterday held at the Jubilee House as part of the process to ensure a smooth transition between the government and the incoming administration.
President Kufuor took the President-elect and his entourage round the new presidential abode amidst gaping mouths for the wonderful work of the outgoing President.
Prof Mills did not hesitate to commend President Kufuor for a job well done, promising to fix the rest of the presidential complex when he takes over tomorrow.
As a first step, transitional teams of both the President-elect and outgoing President will today begin a serious meeting over the transition of power.
On the government's side, a nine-member team chaired by the Chief of Staff and Minister for Presidential Affairs, Mr Kwadwo Mpiani, includes the Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Ministers for Finance and Local Government, the Chief Advisor to the President, Head of Civil Service, Governor of the Bank of Ghana and Head of the Civil Service Commission.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills has already named a 12-member team to assist in the transition from the Kufuor Administration to his government.
The team has P.V. Obeng as Chairman, Alex Segbefia as Secretary and Ms. Hannah Tetteh as Spokesperson.
The memorable event between President Kufuor and the President-elect was characterised by joy and pageantry.
Welcoming Prof Mills and his team, President Kufuor remarked: “You are welcome to this office which is going to be your office after swearing in”.
President Kufuor once again congratulated Prof Mills on his election and noted that history had been made for a worthy son to take over from him.
He then conducted the President-elect and his team round the facility including the presidential office, conference and rest rooms, residence, and cabinet hall among others.
The President-elect who was accompanied by his Vice, John Mahama; party chairman, Dr Kwabena Adjei; General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu-Nketia; Minority Leader, Alban Bagbin and Victor Smith, lauded President Kufuor for his stewardship and contribution to national development.
He said it was impossible for anyone to wish away what Kufuor had done to move Ghana forward.
Prof Mills therefore prayed that God would give President Kufuor good health and long life after his retirement.
Prof. Mills assured President Kufuor that he would complete the Jubilee House project as well as all developmental projects across the country.
He reminded Ghanaians that for now, there was nothing like the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) but one Ghana and one people.
Beaming with smiles after touring the Jubilee House, Prof Mills remarked: “This building is indeed an impressive and imposing edifice and monument of the country's development.”
He assured President Kufuor that he would not hesitate to contact him for the benefit of the country.
The Jubilee House was partly funded by a $150 million grant from the Indian government. Part of the package of $30million will be used to support Ghana's developmental projects with the remaining $50 million for rural electrification project.
