Mr. Thomas Bismark Boakye, the Western Regional Officer of National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), commended drivers for supporting the body to prevent lorry accidents during Christmas and New Year festivities in the region.

In an interview with Ghana News Agency (GNA), on Monday in Takoradi, he said the Commission initiated effective accident prevention measures before the festivities.

Mr. Boakye said the NRSC organised a week-long seminar for drivers in the region and distributed posters and leaflets to companies and organisations to create awareness on road safety and its effects on the economy.

He said security patrols were intensified while road monitors were dispatched to accident spots before and during the festivities and the elections.

Mr Boakye expressed worry that some pedestrians were knocked down around the central business district of Takoradi by vehicles.

He urged the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) to decongest the outer perimeter of the Takoradi market to prevent the knocking down of pedestrian.

Mr. Boakye said plans were under way to educate the public and drivers on road safety and certificate would be issued to drivers who would participate in the programme.
