Miss Lena Alai, Volta Regional Director of the Department of Women on Wednesday urged government to prevail on transport unions to stop the heavy fares charged on wheelchairs.

She was addressing a ceremony in Ho to mark the International Day of the Disabled in the Volta Region.

Miss Alai said it was sad to see the physically challenged at road transport terminals haggling with Station Overseas over quite heavy charges on their mobile chairs which must move with them everywhere they went.

Programmes for the Day, set aside by the UN to “remember and acknowledge the presence of millions of persons with disability in the world”, was coordinated in the Volta Region by Volta Disability Network (VODIN), comprising various disability groups.

Mr Maxwell Dzadey, VODIN Executive Member said there was a lot more to do to mainstream issues concerning the disabled into all sectors of life in the country.

Mr Peter Hlovor, Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare said the physically challenged should not sleep over their rights. He said they must advocate and insist that the laws enacted to protect them worked.
