The National Pensioners' Association of Ghana yesterday, in Accra began its 3rd National Delegates' Conference. The objective was to elect new executives as well as raise pertinent issues confronting workers under the SSNIT Pension Scheme.

An Economist at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Mr Dominic Donkor, said the government has set up a Pension Regulatory Authority and Fare Wages Committee to the ensure that pensioners secure their entitlement without difficulty.

He discolsed that the new pension scheme will be supervised by private Insurance Companies and other government agencies.

According to Mr Donkor the pension regulatory authority needs to be vigilant in order to prevent people from duping retirement benefit of workers.

He advocated for a National Policy for the Aged, saying this will stifle discrimination against the aged. The General Secretary of the Public Services Workers Union of GTUC,

Mr Abraham Tetteh Okine,in a speech was read on his behalf urged the newly elected officers to unite to win public support as well as compel government to come to their aid, and commended government for coming with a new pension scheme to scrap out the CAP 30.

Mr Tetteh Okine added that the GTUC will continue to support their activities to enable pensioners to secure their retirement benefits.

The newly elected President of the Association, Mr Tawiah Yamoson, said his vision is to step-up the membership drive to enable more people to join the Association.
