IN THE run up to the December elections, violent situations have started recurring in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.
24-year-old Abdul Mumin Alhassan, a resident of Gurugu in the Tamale metropolis is the latest victim of political violence, after several wounds were inflicted on him by his assailant only identified as Lazarus, early Tuesday.
According to eyewitnesses the two were engaged in a heated argument over what was believed to be a political issue the night before, after which Lazarus, who is currently on the run, threatened to deal with the victim if he spotted him anywhere.
Taking the threats lightly, the victim met the suspect on Monday evening and another argument ensued. In the process, tempers became high and the suspect removed a dagger and stabbed the victim several times.
Alhassan started bleeding profusely and subsequently became unconscious. The suspect then took cover but luck eluded him as he was apprehended by some members of the Gurugu community. He was however released when his uncle intervened with a promise to produce him whenever the need arose.
Lazarus however went into hiding when the police started hunting for him while his uncle is believed to have also run away from the town.
The victim was rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital while the police have mounted a search for the murder suspect. From Stephen Zoure, Tamale

In the Ghana I knew, if someone is caught "filifili" like that stabbing another person, no matter how influential the Uncle is, the people will make sure he is only released to the police and not take that promise and release the person. Impunity has become the order of the day especially in the north and so people are taking the law into their own hands even in a simple political debate. Why has ...
