The Akwatia Citizens Association in New York has expressed its support for Mr Basil Kwadwo Ahiable, an independent parliamentary candidate for the Akwatia Constituency.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Bernard Ofori Danso, Chairman of the association, said discussions they had with Mr Ahiable indicated that he had good intentions of lifting the constituency from its present decay.

Mr Danso said members were concerned about the present state of Akwatia, and that they were looking for a reliable person at home, through whom they could channel their contributions to salvage the situation.

Mr Michael Fiifi Danso, an Executive Member of the association, expressed concern about how the once vibrant diamond mining and commercial town had virtually become a ghost town, due to neglect and mismanagement of resources and facilities.

Mr Fred Darkwa, an Executive Member, said, “We have studied the background of Mr Ahiable and we are convinced that he is capable of rescuing our town from the doldrums.”

Mr Ahiable, for his part, said he had concluded arrangements with an investor in the USA to establish a modern computer training centre at Akwatia.

The centre, which would train students in hardware and software computing up to a first degree level, is expected to take off next year.
