Check these unauthorised drug peddlers

By Naa Bettey Nelson - Ghanaian Chronicle

Despite several warnings, by the Ghana Food and Drugs Board (FDB), on the selling of unauthorized drugs, some people, especially women, still sell these drugs on the streets of Accra.

These hawkers sell all kinds of drugs, including dry leaves and sticks claiming they are herbal drugs good for the body.

Some of the drugs they sell include abortion peels for unwanted pregnancies, powder for women to attract men, perfume for both men and women for attraction, and some candies to satisfy one, especially women in bed.

With the drugs for abortion, there are no inscriptions written on it, and are sold in sealed, plain polythene bags. Information reaching the Accra File indicates that these drugs are taken according to the number of months of the pregnancy.

Supposing the pregnancy is three months old, there are a specified number of peels needed to be taken, before it terminates it. It was noticed that other also sold items including ground white powder, which is supposed to make a woman's private part tighter.

In an interview with Mavis Owusu, mostly called Maame Esi, who sells these items at Abeka Lapaz, she said that she did not only sell love potions, but also sold all sorts of drugs for sexually transmitted diseases, like Candida, which is normally referred to as White.

Showing some of the drugs to the Accra File, it was noticed that most of the writings on the box/cover of the drugs, especially those for treating infections, were written in Chinese and other languages.

No writing in English, no prescribed dosage, and everything was in the Chinese and Lebanese languages.

When asked how she explained to her customers the use of the drug, she pointed out that explanations on the use of the drug were always given them by the wholesalers.

When this reporter tried to find out whether she was authorized to sell these drugs, she stated that she was sure her drugs would never cause any problems for her.

Maame Esi said she had been selling these drugs for three years, and till now, she has never encountered any problems.

She indicated that most of her herbal medicines were mainly for men with low sperm count, for quick ejaculation, and long sexual affairs.

But with all these unauthorized drugs sold in some part of our society, the FBD should set up committee to discipline people who sell these drugs.

This habit seems to be destroying the lives and fertility of the youth, and needs to be stopped, to save lives. -
