A two storey Administration block constructed by the government at a cost of GH¢780,000 for the Koforidua Polytechnic was dedicated on Monday.

The block which consists of 300 offices, two conference rooms and a cafeteria would bring work of the various departments closer to enhance effective operation.

In a short address, a member of the Polytechnic Council, P N O Yemofio said the project started in 2003 and was supposed to be completed in two years was delayed for five years because of delay in release of funds, and the contractor Kingdwosco Enterprise also played delay tactics.

But, Mr Yemofio, a renowned architect express delight that the project had finally been completed. He recalled that before the new architectural plan was drawn for the institute, the emphasis was more on provision of lecture rooms.

The Rector of the Institute, George Afrane commended the government and GETfund for the project.

He said the Polytechnic Law which gives academic autonomy to Polytechnics as degree awarding institutions and put them on the same pedestal with the Universities posed a big challenge to them.

He advised Polytechnics to do things above self if they want to enjoy respect from Ghanaians, saying, "We have to do the right thing in terms of academic standards".

Dr Afrane announced plans to upgrade the Admissions, Examinations and students Record offices into departments.

Currently, the said the Institute runs 11 programmes. The Rector commended the workers for their hard work, urging that as they enter the new building they should work harder than before.
