NEW: Ghana Tourist Villas offers an unforgettable holiday and business experience in Accra.
Seventy-five suspected armed robbers have been arrested by the Dansoman District Police.

The arrests were made in the early hours of yesterday, August 5, 2008 when the Dansoman Police in collaboration with other divisional commands mounted a dawn-swoop at Dansoman, Chorkor, Mpoase Cemetery, Agege Last Stop and Korle-Gonno Beach Area in Accra to fish out criminals.

The exercise was extended to Gaskia, Freedom Market Sakaman, Russia and Sukura.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, the Dansoman District Police Commander, Superintendent Alex Yartey Tawiah revealed that the exercise was part of their routine activities to curb the rampant reports of criminals and robbery attacks in those areas.

He indicated that in all, 200 police officers and 14 senior officers, led by the Greater Accra Regional Police Operations Officer, Chief Superintendent Yohunu Tetteh, took part in the operation.

The District Commander said when searches were conducted on the suspected robbers, items such as Indian hemp, a whitish substance suspected to be cocaine and deadly weapons such as machetes, scissors and cutlasses were found.

“The 75 arrested suspects included two women; they are in police custody awaiting investigations and screening.”

Superintendent Alex Yartey Tawiah said those found culpable would be put before the court.

“The exercise was necessitated as a result of armed robbery attacks on various citizens during which some phones and cars were snatched from the owners whilst others were also attacked in their homes and laptops, monies and other valuable items were stolen.”

He noted that the police would put suspects on an identification parade at the end of the investigations so victims could identify them.

“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder; it is going to be sustained to rid the city of criminals.”

He appealed to members of the general public who know the hideouts of criminals to help the police arrest them by volunteering information.
