Seventy-five suspected criminals were yesterday arrested in a swoop by the police in a continuing exercise to deal with the crime wave in Accra.

More than 200 police personnel, including 14 officers drawn from various police divisions, were involved in the exercise which took place at the "205" cemetery near the Dansoman Estate Last Stop, Chorkor, Korle-Gonno, Russia, Lartebiokorshie, and Sukura.

Briefing the Times, Dansoman District Police Commander, Superintendent Alex Yartey Tawiah, said the swoop is part of a nationwide exercise to flush out criminals from their hideouts in the various communities.

The 75 suspects, included two women were arrested at Dansoman at about 5 a.m.

Mr Tawiah said cutlasses, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, wrapped whitish substance, suspected to be cocaine, fake currencies and a pair of scissors were found on the suspects.

He said the suspects will be lined up at an identification parade to enable people who have fallen victim to armed robbery attacks, and car snatching, to identify them, as part of a screening exercise.

Supt Tawiah, advised the public to assist the police by providing information on suspected criminals and gave the assurance that informants' identity will be protected.
