The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr. Mawutor Goh, has expressed satisfaction with the National Service Scheme, which he said, was important for the rapid development of the country, as the services of the youth in the various sectors of the economy cannot be over-emphasised.
He said the human resource development was crucial to the government, with emphasis on youth development, noting that with the appropriate skills training, the youth would be able to establish themselves, as well as train others, which was vital for national growth and development.
Mr. Goh, who was speaking at a joint National Service Week celebration of the Ho municipality and the Adaklu-Anyigbe District in Ho, noted with concern that if the country was to attain an appreciable level of growth by the year 2010, the development of the youth should be the focal point.
The Municipal Chief Executive pointed out the need for the youth to identify their talents, work hard and sacrifice a little towards the attainment of success, adding that it was important for the youth to prepare adequately, in order to face the challenges ahead.
Mr. Goh said for individuals and nations to develop, it called for hard work and a sacrifice, saying one major problem, confronting the country over the years, was lack of jobs, a situation that made it impossible for the youth, who graduate from the universities, to get jobs, which he said the government was working hard to address.
He stressed the need for educational institutions, to impact the appropriate skills and knowledge to the youth, which would enable them to establish themselves, and contribute their quota to national development without looking for non-existent jobs.
Mr. Goh said there were many credit facilities, which the youth in entrepreneurship could access to develop their businesses, and said the youth should not be frustrated by the work environment, as well as the accompanying problems, but should take bold steps to address such challenges, so as to become self-reliant.
He noted that the world was in the technological era, where information technology was the order of the day, adding that there was the need for the youth to take advantage of the global information system, to update their knowledge through networking, in order to share ideas, since no single individual can make it alone.
The Ho Municipal Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Mark Totime, noted that the week-long celebration, which formed part of activities to end the service year of the personnel, was to help them to take stock of their achievements, and to prepare for the future.
He also used the opportunity to advise the youth, to refrain from all forms of negative practices which could destroy their development, adding that the youth should not involve themselves illegal acts, especially during the electioneering period, which would create disturbances in the society.
The Headmaster of the Awudome Senior High School, Mr. G. O. Y. Bonoedi, said National Service personnel have been contributing immensely, to the promotion of education in the country, and urged them to take up teaching as a profession, because there were still vacancies in schools in the country.
The Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Francis Dzineku, asked the youth to be time-conscious in all their activities, saying for the youth to be successful in life, there was the need to effectively manage their time, and stressed the need for the youth to remember God in all their activities.
The Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Mr. Ralph Avornyo, who launched the week, stressed the need to start education of the youth from the kindergarten, on why they should be patriotic to the state, so that before they grow up, the youth would be patriotic.
