Newmont Gold Ghana has been certified by the International Cyanide Management Institute as one of the most responsible mining companies in Ghana in terms of environmental management and development in areas within its concession, especially, the Ahafo mines.
This is attributed to the company's efforts towards high "value of leadership in safety, stewardship of environment and social responsibility", continuous development of communities it operates in and the well-being of its workforce.
Announcing this to the media in Accra, Newmont's Regional Vice President for Environment and Social Responsibility, Nick Cotts said a company could only be ICMI fully compliant when it had given full details of Audit Findings of its Operations prepared by an independent third-party auditor for assessment.
According to Nick Cotts, their report evaluated the agreement of Newmont, Ahafo Operation with the ICMI´s Verification on Protocol and was systematically accepted.
The International Cyanide Management Institute is known to be renewing and updating the examination of the full compliance with the Code´s Principles and Standards of Practice every three-years to keep companies in full compliance.
"This certification reinforces Newmont´s commitment to demonstrating its vision of being 'The Gold Company of Choice' through industry leading practice", Scotts intimated.
"Newmont Mining Corporation has been attaching importance to the International Cyanide Management Code over a long time hence, our continuous success", he expressed with a lot of pride.
There are already seven Newmont mines which have become certified, among them, two mines in the USA and one in Peru.
The Cyanide Code is a voluntary base programme established by the International Gold Mining Industry to "promote responsible management of cyanide" especially,
the protection of human health and the reduction of the potential for negative environmental impacts. Cyanide has been described as a strong poison which is extensively used in gold mining.
