Oman FM, a private radio station in Accra last Tuesday held a musical fiesta, dubbed 'megabash' in a series of activities marking its first year of successful broadcasting in the city.
The station which began test transmission on May 1, 2007, followed by news reading on June 18 2007, has won an award from the National Media Commission for fair and balanced coverage.
Despite its location in cosmopolitan Madina, the station reaches a high number of audiences in the Eastern and Volta regions. Many listeners, including commuters never missed the “succulent” voice of Okyerefour on its popular “Yekofie” show at dusk.
The event started off with a brief introduction by the station's presenters, 'Ageogia' and 'Okyerefour,' after which the 'Prince of Peace' band played gospel praises in Akan, English and French.
The crowd went ecstatic as the band sang 'Munyi Awurade Aye' (Praise the Lord), drawing one of the station's popular presenters Awana to the dancing floor along songstress Ohemma Mercy.
Renowned dancer and musician Slim Buster also entreated the audience with his “ma cherita” and “chicken darling” jigs.
The evening was well compensated for, as ace hi-life artist Amakye Dede, and others thrilled the audience with good renditions, as well as hip-life.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mrs Stella Wilson-Agyapong, Acting Chief Executive of Kencity Media Limited, operators of Oman FM, said the aim of the station was to drive the nation towards tolerance, democratic principles and the love for one another.
“Information should be used to improve the lives of people,” she said.
Mrs Wilson-Agyapong commended the staff for their hard work.
She also expressed appreciation to the public for supporting the station.
