The Chief Medical Superintendent at the La General Hospital, Dr Patrick Frimpong has called on government to consider expanding the hospital to be able to contain the numerous patients that throng the various wards everyday for medical care.

He said while there was the need for a new building to be erected, it was necessary for the existing one, which is always threatened by sea breeze, to make it last for a longer period.

He made this request when the Rotaract Club of Accra, a sub-Club of Rotary International, made some donations to the Children's Ward of the hospital over the weekend.

According to Frimpong, since the introduction of the NHIS and the upgrading of the Polyclinic into a full hospital, attendance of patients had overwhelmingly increased; a situation that he said places much burden on the hospital authorities. He therefore, called for government's intervention to relieve the medical officers from stress.

He indicated that the Hospital had been applying the National Health Insurance Scheme for all registered expectant women, and also subsidizes the fees of unregistered poor and financially constrained ones.

He further called on stakeholders in the health sector to assist his outfit to solve the water problem facing the hospital, adding that a lot had been done but not adequate enough to meet the needs of the hospital.

The Rotaract Club donated several items worth GH¢600 to the children on admission at the hospital.

Donation of the items, which included a 21-inch television set, blankets, toys, bowls and buckets, was in response to a request made by the hospital authorities. They were to be used to entertain depressed and sick infants who are brought there.

Presenting the items, the President of the Club, Rami Sabeh, said it was an opportunity for a Club of almost 20 members that was formed in less than two years, to initiate its first humanitarian project to help in uplifting the hopes and aspirations of Ghanaian children. He called on the most privileged individuals in society to assist the less privileged ones.

"We thought of initiating such a project as a follow-up to the recent celebration of the World Child Labour Day - when children were described as the most vulnerable in the world. It is our determination to reach out to them and make them feel excited in life", the President said. Source: The Statesman - The Statesman
