NEW: Ghana Tourist Villas offers an unforgettable holiday and business experience in Accra.
It is estimated that close to 1.2million people in the Northern Region representing 62 percent of the population of the region have been registered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Officials say out of this figure, over eight hundred have been issued with ID cards and are said to be accessing free health care at the various hospitals, clinics and pharmacies across the region.

This positive development was disclosed by the Northern Regional Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority, Hudu Issah at the launching of the Zabzugu-Tatale Mutual Health Insurance Scheme at the weekend.

According to Mr Issah, card bearing members of the scheme get treated free of charge for ailments that would have cost them hundreds of cedis under the Cash and Carry health care system, which used to operate before the NPP Government took over the affairs of state in 2001.

He assured the public that the Health Insurance Authority will work around the clock to establish "one of the best Health Insurance Schemes in the world that can stand the test of time."

The Zabzugu-Tatale District Scheme Manager, Abdulai Abukari said the district scheme has seen tremendous growth in both finance and number since its inception in 2005.

According to him, the start up membership of 3,834 in 2005 has now shot up to about 54,217 representing about 61 percent of the district population as at the close of March this year.

He further stated that the scheme has been able to honour all its financial obligations to all service providers to the tune of GH¢194,461 for more than 43,000 of its clients who visited various accredited health facilities across the country.

Despite the positive stride the district has made, Mr Abukari noted that the scheme encountered initial problems such as low patronage, inadequate logistics, political extremism, seasonal income of the people, apathy, large family size, among others.

However, in spite of this negative trend of affairs, "the scheme management in collaboration with its development partners did not relent its effort in demystifying the mysteries surrounding the health insurance scheme in the district," Mr Abukari stressed.
