The Greater Accra Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party is to conduct investigations into the circumstances leading to the popular acclamation of Nana Akomea, Member of Parliament for Okai Koi South, as the Parliamentary nominee for the constituency in the December 8, 2008 general election.

A release signed by the regional NPP Chairman, Mr Sammy crabbe advised the delegates and party faithful at the constituency to remain calm as the party would ensure that the procedure established by the constitution of the party for the election of parliamentary candidates was followed.

According to the release, it had come to the attention of the region that a delegates' conference was convened at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex to acclaim Nana Akomea as the party's parliamentary candidate for the Okai Koi South Constituency.

It said the constitution of the NPP had set out the procedure for electing a parliamentary candidate in the following Articles:

Article 6:7 (i) sates: “The Constituency Chairperson shall be the executive head of the party in the constituency and the convener of meetings of the Constituency Executive Committee.”

Article 6:19 also states that: “Every Constituency Executive Committee shall convene an Extraordinary Constituency Delegates Conference to select the parliamentary candidate for the constituency.”

We, therefore, wish to state that, “The Constituency Chairman did not convene any Constituency Executive Committee meeting to discuss and convene any constituency delegates' conference to select the parliamentary candidate for the Okai Koi South Constituency at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex.”

It stated that due process was not followed in the so-called acclamation, adding that the region was not aware of any such delegates' conference and did not officially assign any of its officers to supervise the so-called acclamation.

“By this release, we want all members, delegates, executive and the general pubic to be informed that the so-called delegates' conference convened on Sunday, June 1, 2008 was illegal; therefore, whatever decision that came out of that gathering is null and void and has no force,” the statement said.
