Mrs. Gladys Micah, the Head of Counselling Unit of the Central Regional Directorate of Ghana Education Service, on Monday appealed to parents to desist from forcing their children to attend certain senior high schools or imposing courses on them.
She expressed concern that this practice had led to most students failing their final examination.
Mrs Micah said this at the launch of a book, “After Junior High School What Next?” written by her outfit to help parents, teachers and counsellors curb the anxiety and frustration pupils go through in choosing schools and programmes for the SHSs.
The book deals with issues such as choosing of schools, types of courses offered, location of schools and proper subject combination.
Mrs Micah said many parents make their children “become dropouts” because when they did not get the schools of their choice, they engage them in less productive ventures rather than putting them in technical and vocational institutions.
Mrs Mary Ackummey, Head of Counselling Unit of the University of Education, Winneba, appealed to parents to involve teachers and counsellors when choosing schools and programmes for their wards.
“It is the teachers and the counsellors who know the strength and weakness of the child.”
Professor Victor Gadzekpo, President of the Central University College, appealed to parents to purchase and study the book to help shape the right future for their children.
