Ridiculous, Unimaginable!
16.05.2008 LISTEN

One of the stories in this edition (page 16) is capable of raising the adrenalin level of the most patient person.
It is a serious matter which calls for an expedited action from the germane authorities.

Imagine a suspect deflowering a school girl, 15, and just when the law was about to descend on the perpetrator, there is an alleged interference from somewhere and frightened cops at the Berekum Police Station look away as the suspect is let off the hook.

After fleeing the town for a while, the suspect returns with a certain vengeance, periodically luring the girl to his abode for sex orgies as her helpless mother, too afraid to challenge the aggressor, begs him to give her daughter a breather from the sessions.

The girl's schooling has suffered a setback after being dismissed.
Her distraught father, a pharmacy technician, whines in despair as his quest for justice and protection for the girl appears to have eluded him.

Not even the intervention of the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs has yielded any dividend as the perpetrator straddles Berekum like a Colossus doing what he pleases.

Our dismay at this story about which the Children's Ministry wrote to the then Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, is unimaginable.

In a country which prides itself in championing the rule of law, a fact which is undeniable, it is beyond our ken to think that such an aberration can take place.

We refuse to accept the alibi by the Berekum Police that the matter is beyond them and that the victim's father should look elsewhere.

We are equally disturbed that even after two correspondences from the Women and Children's Ministry, copies of which were sent to the IGP and other authorities, nothing has happened.

In fact it appears the correspondences have rather fueled the libido of the perpetrator as he continues to savour the girl with reckless abandon.

There is rule of law in Ghana and it is our belief that such matters should not be swept under the carpet as though some Ghanaians are above the law.

Although the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs did their best by writing to the relevant bodies for action, we are not amused that they appear to have given up after the second letter.

Indeed they should have continued to press on with the matter until justice is meted to the girl and the necessary protection provided her. After all, other options are available.

The victim of the sexual orgy appears to have, through no fault of hers, dropped out of school. The reason for this is not immediately available to us but we believe that her local JSS authorities decided to dismiss her because she has been missing classes.

What can we expect when her sex assailant can commandeer her to warm his bed for days on end as a helpless Police Station looks on?

We are not in a lawless country where such acts can go on with nothing happening. We demand immediate action from the Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command because we do not think this is beyond them.

The records are there for them to work on. This is ridiculous and outrageous in a country which has a respectable position in the international community.

The girl must be saved now and the Don Juan brought to book no matter who his father is. The law of the land is supreme.
