American Textiles Giant To Invest 30 Million Dollars In Ghana

An American textiles giant, 1888 Mills Incorporated, has expressed interest in establishing a factory in the Ghana's Free Zones Enclave to take advantage of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The company, which has contract with some leading stores in the United States, including Walmart and Cosco, would initially put 30 million dollars into the project, expected to take off before the end of the year.

Mr Chris Motley, the company's International Agent, made this known when he paid a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu, yesterday. The Chicago-based company, he said, was operating in Pakistan and Bangledesh from where towels, bed sheets and medical coats among other fabrics, are sold on the US market.

Mr Motley said they were attracted to the country by the business friendly environment. Adequate groundwork had already been done for work on the factory to start, he said, adding that when operational, the factory would give employment and help to propel the growth of some of the local textile manufacturing companies by sub-letting some contracts to them.

President Kufuor welcomed the initiative and assured the Company of the Government's support.
