THE HEALTH Minister, Maj. Courage Quashigah (rtd) last Friday, undertook an hour-long inspection tour of some facilities at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The Minister and his entourage were taken round by some authorities of the hospital led by the acting Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ben Annan.

The inspection tour was among other things, aimed at helping the Ministry of Health find ways to reduce maternal and infant mortality, address issues affecting health workers, and assist Korle-Bu to complete the 18 billion Cedi Medical Block project.

His first point of call was the new Gynaecology Theatre where he inspected equipment, and observed an operation being carried out on a woman with fibroid.

Prof. Lassey Anyetei, acting Head of the Unit said work was smooth, except that only two of the three theatres are operational.

He appealed to the MOH to lend a helping hand to equip the third one so as to make it functional.

The Minister and his entourage then moved to the hospital's Medical Block where rehabilitation work is ongoing.

Mr. Dan Seedah, Consulting Engineer of MACDONS Engineering Consult, contractors of the 18 billion Cedi project briefed the Minister and said, work on the block was expected to be completed by July this year.

He called for the necessary support to enable the company complete work on the block as scheduled.

The inspection of a 16-unit SSNIT block of flats for medical officers at Korle-Bu and other health centres was the final point of call by the sector minister.

He was briefed on work done so far. The project, initiated by the management of Korle-Bu, begun in 1992 but was brought to a halt in 1999 due to lack of funds.

In 2006, the Ministry of Health secured a ¢13.4 billion loan facility from the Ministry of Finance through SSNIT to complete it.

Dr. Annan told newsmen that 10 percent of the doctors' salaries would be deducted as rent.

The Minister expressed joy at work done so far and pledged his ministry's preparedness to help in providing resources for the procurement of certain equipment needed urgently by the hospital.
He also urged Korle-Bu to keep up the good work.
