KUMASI, THE Ashanti regional capital was thrown into a state of wild jubilation immediately the senior national team, the Black Stars beat their Guinean counterparts by 2-1 at the Ohene Djan Stadium last Sunday.

Residents of the metropolis jammed the principal streets of the city when proceedings of the opening game which was the official opening of the 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations was brought to a close.

People from all walks of life, including the old and the young who were dressed in national colours were seen dancing to different types of music being played at various drinking spots across the entire city.

Taxi drivers were not left out in the celebrations. They were seen driving at top speed, and tooting their horns in celebration of Black Stars' victory.

Almost every corner of the city, including the residential areas like Atasemanso, Ahodwo and Asokwa, which used to be quiet, had metamorphosed into areas of jamboree.

The mother of all jubilations was held at Bantama where all the drinking spots were filled to the brim minutes after the game, and in the process drinking spot owners recorded colossal sales.

Excited soccer fans were seen dancing on the Bantama High Street that links Abrepo Junction with Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), causing heavy vehicular traffic in the process.

The wild jubilations were carried deep into the night with the night clubs such as Genesis, Fox, Kiravi and Café Massaretti being the final destination.

Meanwhile, some soccer fans who were also in jubilant moods were not all that convinced about the performance of the Stars and called on the technical team to be up and doing to avert any shock in the remaining encounters.

They were not pleased with the selection of the coach and urged the technical team to select the first eleven based on current form and not on names, arguing that some of the so-called stars had not performed to expectation.

“Laryea Kingston was not fully fit and I am surprised that he lasted the full 90 minutes of the game,” Kwaku Frimpong, a soccer fan complained. From Fred J A Ibrahim Jnr., Kumasi
