The Electricity Company of Ghana has explained the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident of electricity power failure at Essipon Sports Stadium on Monday during the Group B encounter of the Africa Cup of Nations between Mali and Benin.

In a press release signed by the company's Director of Operations, Ing. A.T. Barfour, ECG said: “Electricity supply to the stadium during the matches was from two mobile generators (1.2MW each) brought by the emergency power task force.

“ECG has firm supply to the stadium through two 11kVcircuits: A31 and A57. ECG supply was being used as a standby source to the stadium.

“During the period one of the two generators developed a fault. The load was therefore taken up by the second generator,” the release said.

It added: “At the commencement of the Mali/Benin match, the second generator also developed a fault at 19:25hrs.

“ECG's supply as stand-by was then quickly switched on within a minute i.e. 19:26hrs.”

According to the company, it however took the stadium authorities sometime to restore lights to the stadium fully at 19:41hours.

“It is to be noted that ECG supply through the grid remained stable throughout the period, as evidenced by the external lighting around the stadium.

“The public is hereby assured that EGG has put in adequate measures to supply the various stadia within its jurisdiction as the main source of supply or as stand-by as the case may be,” it concluded.
