Bawku Citizens Urged To Promote Girl-Child Educ.

THE Bawku Naaba, Asigri Abugrago Azokah II, has appealed to sons and daughters of the traditional area to place emphasis on improving facilities put in place to promote girl-child education contributing by meaningfully to the Bawku Education Fund.

This, he noted, will go a long way to assist needy but brilliant students in the area to pursue higher education as a means of boosting the human resource base of the land.

Naaba Azokah made the appeal on the occasion of the celebration of the 20th Samanpiid festival here. It was on the theme: 'Ghana@50, consolidating the gains of the Samanpiid festival'.

He urged the Fund management committee to re-double their efforts in raising more funds towards its sustainability.

Naaba Azokah commended the Garu-Tampane District Assembly for completing the Tempane Senior High School girl’s dormitory which was initiated by the fund.

On the cultural front, the chief challenged parents to stop sponsoring expensive funerals and organising parties and 'rather use their resources on their children’s education to brighten their future.' He however encouraged the youth to consider reading traditional music, dance and drama courses at the tertiary level to re-kindle the spirit of the nation’s cultural renaissance.

Naaba Azoka said 'western cultural invasion is threatening most Ghanaian societies today, especially among the youth which needed to be discarded to safe-guard the nation’s rich cultural heritage.'

'When our youth indulge in dancing to music provided by spinners from dusk till dawn at funeral houses, a lot of inappropriate activities occur resulting into sexual promiscuity, alcoholism and the use of narcotic drugs that induce criminal activities,' he cautioned.

'Our culture does not encourage waywardness and immorality hence as custodians of our people, we have a duty to protect and promote the good aspects of our cultural heritage as a means of discouraging or stopping what is primitive or harmful to them like the female genital mutilation,' he added.
