Participants at the annual 59th New Year School currently going on at the University of Ghana, Legon, have commended President J.A. Kufuor and his government for their commitment to democracy and good governance.

They said good governance and democracy have been entrenched in the country and this has led to a stable country resulting in the improvement of tertiary education in particular.

The participants were speaking to the Times yesterday as the paper sampled views on the performance of the president and the NPP government with particular exphasis on tertiary education.

Yesterday was exactly seven years since Mr. J.A. Kufuor assumed office as president and the theme for this year’s New Year school is 'Tertiary Education and National Development'.

The District Chief Educative for Wassa Amenfi, Samuel Tekyi Alberto, said the spirit of tolerance exhibited by the President has made him to win the confidence of the international community and this projected the image of Ghana. He said the President’s invitation by both the Presidents of the United States and Britain, his election as Chairman of the African Union and his co-hosting of the recent EU-Africa meeting have won him respect internationally.

He said even in the face of escalating oil prices, Ghana is still experiencing economic growth with access to tertiary education improving tremendously. The Dean of Creative Arts at the University of Education, Winneba, Prof. James Flolu, said there has been expansion of infrastructure, provision of facilities and motivation of university lecturers to the extent that the young were now taking up lecturing.

He said Ghana was also moving steadily in all fronts of development, particularly in the construction of roads and schools.

The Principal of Wiawso Training College, Georgina Larbey, commended government for introducing a programme to train and retrain teachers to meet the demands of the new education policy.

'But for this programme, I do not know that some teachers lacked the required skills to impart knowledge to their students', she stated.

She commended government for introducing ICT programmes in schools to facilitate teaching and learning.

The chairman for the Ghana Mine Workers Union, Anglogold Ashanti Branch in Obuasi, Kwarko Mensah Gyarko said government has done a lot but complained that mine workers were still suffering.
