With barely one week to the highlight of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Ghana's Independence on March 6, it is still unclear if former President Jerry Rawlings will honour government's invitation to attend the ceremony.

A government delegation led by the Chairman of the Council of State, Prof. Daniel Adsei-Bekoe and which included prominent religious leaders extended a formal invitation to the former President about a fortnight ago to participate in the jubilee celebrations.

Special aide to Mr. Rawlings, Victor Smith told Joy News the former president was yet to take a decision.

He said Mr. Rawlings left the country on Monday on a five-day visit to South Africa for the Africa Forum conference on corruption.

He was accompanied by his wife, Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings and is expected back at the weekend. Mr. Smith said the former president will take a decision on his return.

On Monday The Chronicle newspaper reported that the former President would not honour the invitation, quoting its sources close to Mr. Rawlings.
