The management of Ghana Post is to begin a counter compu-terisation programme to make the company more competitive.
This is part of a programme by the management to reposition the company to respond to the demands for efficient postal services and to provide customers with what they want.
This is contained in a statement issued in Accra by the company to mark this year’s Pan African Post Day which fell on January 18.
The Day is set aside by the Pan African Postal Union to create awareness in the minds of the public on the important role the Post plays in the development of countries.
This year’s theme was: 'The Post at the heart of competition'
The statement said when the counter computerisation has been done Ghana Post will integrate internet cafes as a core business into its business nationwide.
'There will also be other new service which we will introduce taking advantage of the opportunities that ICT will create for us. These include bill payments for utilities and money transfer services,' it said.
The statement said in Africa and more especially Ghana, where liberalisa-tion has been total, public postal operations must show tenacity and initiative to be able to face the competitive environment to remain in business.
This means that public postal operations must adopt strategic re-orientation of activities for survival and prosperity for their companies.
The postal market in Ghana has seen a progressive competition. There is competition from all angles, the statement said.
According to the statement, the challenge now is to diversify Ghana Post’s operations to take advantage of the wealth creating capacities of the new technologies to enrich the postal business to a winning enterprise.
It said the management of Ghana Post will use all its ingenuity to face the increasing competition to be able to survive and be viable.
