India Marks Republic Day

A flag-hoisting ceremony was yesterday held at the residence of the Indian High Commissioner, Rajesh Nandan Prasad, to mark the 58th Republic Day of India.

It was attended by a large section of the Indian community in Ghana.

The speech of the Indian President, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam which was delivered on his behalf by the High Commissioner centred on national development, eradication of cruelty towards children and the role of every Indian in building a developed India by 2020.

Spelling out what he called 'the ambience in 2020', the President stressed the need for a national movement of development which must involve the active participation of all Indians.

'Citizens participation can be in many important areas like reaching the unreached, feedback on service to the people, human resource development, entrepreneurship, role of home makers, environment development and youth participation in political system with a focus on developed India,' he said.

He said that children were the wealth of the country and indicated that the eradication of cruelty against children should be the mission of every Indian.

The President urged the youth to among other things imbibe the value of courage to give, to think differently and to invent.

On national security, the President commended the country’s armed forces and paramilitary forces for their vigilance thereby facilitating unhindered progress of national development.

The ceremony was also attended by a large section of the Indian community in Ghana.
