Opposition candidate given 24 hours ultimatum

MANSO ATWERE, November 30 -- The NPP candidate for Amansie West, Mr Stephen Cobbina Obuor-Karikari, has been given 24 hours to show where he did his National Service after graduation in 1981.

The Amansie West District branch of the Veranda Boys and Girls Club of the ruling National Democratic Congress, which gave the ultimatum, accused Obuor-Karikari of dodging National Service.

Mr Owusu Yeboah, Secretary of the Club, said it has a copy of Obuor-Karikari's Curriculum Vitae, which did not indicate where he did his National Service after leaving the University of Cape Coast (UCC), in 1981, before taking up an appointment in Nigeria in 1982.

He warned that failure to confirm or deny that he dodged National Service would compel the club to take legal action against him. Obuor-Karikari, who is a Lecturer at the UCC, could not be reached for his reaction. There is a law in Ghana, which compels one to do the national service before entering the private/public sector employment.
