I was glad when I saw the commercial showing for the first-ever locally produced serial for Viasat 1, 'Money and Fame'. I was getting fed up with the Nigerian stuff on the network and I wanted something more homegrown. Viasat had hinted us right from the moment they started broadcasting in Ghana that the network is only interested in quality productions so I understood that it would take a while for us to get there.

Well finally we got there, and after seeing the first episode of the drama series I am not totally blown away. The acting is still uncomfortable to watch at times; the dialogue is unreal and too methodical most of the time; and I have a feeling it's going to be another serial on the antics of youth without necessarily reflecting on the realities on the ground. However, the quality of the pictures is amazing and some nice angles pop up every now and then. The first episode had some fly on the wall moments, and some of the actors just cannot pretend as if the cameras were not there. Maybe it's about time we got rid of the notion that anyone can 'chew' lines and get in front of a camera to act.

Money and Fame has an interesting cast and I guess that is why I can't shake off the feeling that at the end of the series, I would say that I have seen it all before. Well, who knows the series could make another actor a celebrity overnight so I am not going to judge too soon (that's if I haven't already). Let's watch and see!!!
