After five years of missing the regional segment of the Miss Ghana contest, residents of Wa in the Upper West Region are poised to enjoy an evening of music, dance and glamour as this year’s Miss Ghana and National Dance Championship kicks off there tonight .
The exciting aspect of the Miss Ghana competition this year is that for the first time, the public will have some say in who represents them at the grande finale. Unlike previous editions where judges selected two beauties to represent each region, three contestants will now be selected and the public will vote to choose which one of them goes through to the final event in Accra.
“Our aim is to make the event more interactive by giving the public a chance to make an input,” Mr Christopher Adama, Managing Director of Media Whizz Kids, the pageant organiser, said in a chat with Daily Graphic. “We realise participation of the public is important in deciding who wears the regional and eventually, the national crown.”
This year, the winner of the beauty contest will drive away a new Tata Safari vehicle as well as represent Ghana at the Miss World contest. Media Whizz Kids says it hopes to produce a Miss World from Ghana by the end of 2011.
The dance championship is open to individuals and groups. The champion will receive GH¢5,000 plus sponsors’ products.
Part of the entertainment package for Wa are musicians King Ayisoba, Kawa Stone and Sherifatu Gunu. They are all known names in the northern regions and a sizeable audience is expected to turn up tonight to be thrilled by their music.
This year’s Miss Ghana and National Dance Championship is sponsored by PHC Motors, DDP, Bonaqua, Labadi Beach Hotel, ABL, Danny’s Decoration, GTV, Somovision, Soundcheck, Trendsetters and Graphic Showbiz.
