The IDOLS Top 6 contestants are just three shows away from the finale, where two contestants will battle it out for fame, fortune and a recording deal through SonyBMG.
It's a competition for the continent, by the continent – and the viewers have all the power. This week, Africa voted and on Monday June 30 on M-Net, DStv audiences watched as Zimbabwe's Mkhululi was the latest IDOL to be voted out of the show.
Monday's show started with a review of IDOLS mentor Kawesa Richard's opinion. On Sunday night he rated Ammara and Eric as the best performers of the evening, lauded Adiona as most improved and declared Mkhululi as “Ground Zero” for what he saw as a less-than-impressive performance.
Host Lebo Mzimbi read out the judges' predictions for this week. TK thought Mkhululi would be going home, while Angela and Scar agreed that Sunday's performance would be Nicollette's last on IDOLS.
After the contestants shared their thoughts on the judges' comments, the hard work began. Lebo called Ammara forward first, and read out the judges' thoughts on her performance. Without revealing her fate, he sent her to stand on his left.
Nicollette was up next – and Lebo asked her to stand to his right. She was followed by Eric and Trinah, who both joined Ammara.
The final two contestants - Mkhululi and Adiona – then joined Nicollette on Lebo's right.
This week, the contestants had been split into a top and bottom three. When Lebo asked Trinah which group she thought she was in, she couldn't decide. Adiona, standing to the right, felt that her group wasn't safe. Lebo waited a few moments before telling her that her instinct was correct – and sent Eric, Trinah and Ammara to the safe seats.
Nicollette was sent to the safe seats, leaving Mkhululi and Adiona as the only remaining contenders for elimination. Lebo then revealed that the person with the least votes this week was Mkhululi, who bowed to the continent before telling Eric – now the last man standing in the competition - to 'bring it home'.
Now the focus turns to the sixth IDOLS spectacular this weekend, where the theme is “My Idol” – a show which will allow the contestants to pay tribute to their musical inspiration. The contestants will sing two songs each as they bid to impress Africa even further.
There are now only 5 contestants in with a shot at the ultimate prize of US$80,000 and a recording deal through SonyBMG. They will battle it out at next week's sixth spectacular show, broadcast on M-Net (DStv Channel 101/2) on Sunday July 6.
