Ghanaians do not project our culture in their music - Knii Lante

Musician, Knii Lante is astonished about how Ghanaian musicians do not project the country’s culture in their music.

He thinks the country has failed to penetrate the international market because Ghanaian musicians do not incorporate indigenous forms of music into their songs.

“We have solid talents and music over here, even our traditional music forms ‘Borborbor’, ‘Adowa’, ‘Kpanlogo’ and things like that and we tend not to project them,” he noted.

Knii Lante, born Nii Okunka Blankson expressed the sentiment during an interview with Hitz @ 1 on Hitz FM.

He cited Nigerian artiste Davido, as one of the Nigerian musicians who take local rhythms and sings a song based on the rhythm for it to become a hit.

The ‘Baby Take Good Care’ singer thinks that Ghanaians easily turn their attention from old genres of music when new trends of music are introduced.

“Ghanaian [musicians] are too fixated on one music forms, when one music form comes, everybody goes there and then everything else is neglected”.

“I think we should give ample space for every type of genre of music in this country and investors should invest because music is big business,” he added.

“I’m sure a whole lot of musicians have [also] realised this about the Ghana music scenes,” the musician cum physician said.

Giving his take on reggae music in Ghana today, the musician noted that, “In Ghana, reggae is loved but there is a certain hypocrisy about it because of the stereotyping of the music”.

He concluded that, “People tend to attach reggae music to smoking marijuana and the religion of Rastafarianism but reggae is bigger than all that now”.
