General News I Stopped Acting Because It Was Not Paying – Kwami Sefa Kayi
SEP 3, 2015 LISTEN

Highly-revered broadcast journalist, Kwami Sefa Kayi, is well-known for his role as the host of the award-winning morning show, ‘Kokrokoo’ on Peace FM 104.3, but many do not know that he started his sojourn in show business as an arts writer and got his breakthrough as a movie star.

He was one of the go-to male actors in the movie industry in the mid-90s but for some reason(s), he has not been featured in movies in recent years. The last movie he featured in, was some five years ago, in the Shirley Frimpng-Manso movie, ‘Scorned’. By:MustaphaInusah/Razzonline.Com

Kwami spoke to Abeiku Santana on Okay FM and he explained the reason he’s not featuring in Ghanaian movies anymore.

The fact is; I stopped acting because it wasn’t paying, and the fact that one has to spend hours on location and go home with nothing,” he said.

He continued that, apart from the lack of payment, the story lines of the movies were not interesting and as an actor, all you benefit is seeing yourself on the screen.

“Those days, radio was paying me much better and I use to also get some money from MC jobs compared to the acting where all you benefit was to see yourself on the screen,” he explained.

The radio personality used the opportunity to clarify the reason he quit hosting duties for some high-profile shows including Ghana Music Awards and Miss Ghana.

He claimed that he stopped not because of money; rather, it gets to a point where one has to move out for others to also come and continue.

“So, I hear people are complaining that my charges are high, yes, my rates are indeed up now and justifiably so. We love to glorify poverty, too much, the Lord has been good to me, and if my profile has gone up I think my charges are reasonable.”

He added, “When you do certain things for long, move on to bigger things and let the younger talents take over.”
