Controversial reggae musician, Blakk Rasta, could be hauled before Parliament’s privileges committee for alleging that some members of parliament smoke cannabis.

The ‘Barack Obama’ hit singer, born Abubakar Ahmed, who is also the host of Taxi Driver on Hitz FM is alleged to have said 80 percent of members of Ghana’s parliament smoke marijuana, known locally as ‘wee’.

On Wednesday, on the floor of parliament, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya Sekyere East, Hendricks David Yeboah drew the attention of the Speaker, Edward Doe Adjaho, to the issue as captured in the Searchlight Newspaper.

“Mr Speaker there is a serious indictment in the Searchlight Newspaper. There is a musician called Blakk Rasta, he said 80 percent of MPs smoke weed and I think it’s [an] indictment,” Mr Yeboah told the Speaker.

The Speaker said he will look at the publication and “at the appropriate time we can take the matter up.”

After a meeting with the speaker on the subject, Mr. Hendricks David Yeboah told Joy News’ parliamentary correspondent Elton Brobbey that he is cleared to raise the issue on the floor of parliament.

He said his “concern is that Blakk Rasta has to respect members of parliament. Everybody comes out and say anything they want to say against members of parliament.”

The MP, who said he does not even smoke cigarette, wondered what research finding Blakk Rasta was using to back his claim.

“He has to come out and meet the privileges committee and explain what kind of research [did he conduct to conclude that] 80% percent [smoke]…I think 50% don’t even smoke,” Mr Yeboah said.
