Beauty pageants generally are just full of glitz and glam and serves, from what I see, as pure entertainment and do not contribute to society as perceived.

After a winner is being crowned as a new Queen, receives all the expensive prizes including clothes, money, scholarships and sometimes a brand new car, that ends it for them, they never continue to pursue their project which they promised to embark should they be crowned winner.

As I pondered the question further I began to wonder if beauty pageants really do contribute to society when my attention was drawn to the great works of TV3’s Ghana’s Most Beautiful VIII winner Miss Bentie Abigail Baciara staged name Baci from the Upper West region of Ghana.

The 23yr old degree holder from the University of Development Studies, Wa Campus, has by far contributed immensely to her community, after being crowned winner for the 2014 GMB pageant and received all the expensive prices like Hyundai saloon car, a cheque amount of GH¢10,000, one year supply of wax print from GTP, and souvenirs from the sponsors.

Baci’s aim of putting smiles on the face of the Ghanaian child as she pledged during the finals of the pageant, led her to donate sorted food items to Tamale Orphanage and Child Support Ghana, a non-governmental organisation that caters for young female orphans in WA.

Chiefs of Wala Traditional Council in a durbar last year, honored Baci with the title ‘Papaaliba-Pognaa’ which means ‘Queen mother for the youth’ to celebrate her achievements and her positive contribution towards the society.

The pretty light-skinned beauty queen, as part of giving back to society is set to launch an NGO named Malol-lol Ghana Foundationat the Best Western Premier Hotel Today, 30th May at 4:00pm.

Malol-lol Ghana Foundation is a Sisala word from the Upper West Region that means ‘Thank You Ghana’ with its slogan ‘Help Today, Smile Tomorrow’ to help children in all aspects to contribute to the development of Ghana.

From this, I have come to believe that pageants do in fact contribute positively to society aside from giving me some good entertainment.

Kudos Ms Abigail BaciaraBentieaka Baci for her great works and call on all other beauty queens to not just bear the title but work hard as a role model and also emulate from the works of Baci.
