A+E Networks® has acquired the exclusive TV rights for Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me, a non-scripted film that follows Golden Globe®-winning actor Idris Elba on a journey of self-discovery after starring in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

The documentary will air on HISTORY® (DStv channel 186) in Africa later this year. Directed by BAFTA award-winner Daniel Vernon, the one-hour documentary chronicles the inspiring story behind the creation of Mi Mandela, an album of South African music recorded by the actor in tribute to Nelson Mandela and to his own beloved father, who passed away last year.

Idris Elba said: “Although difficult at times, Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me was an incredibly fulfilling project and I’m thrilled to bring the film to Africa. HISTORY offers the perfect platform to share this story and I hope viewers enjoy following my journey while producing my album Mi Mandela, a tribute to my father and to Mandela, one of Africa’s - and the world’s - most inspirational icons.’’

Announcing the acquisition, Rachel Job, Director of Programming for HISTORY at A+E Networks, said: “We are excited to bring this fantastic new piece of content to Africa. Idris Elba: Mandela, My Dad & Me will resonate with our HISTORY viewers, as it brings to life a remarkable personal story combined with the musical culture and history of South Africa.”

The documentary is a Green Door Pictures, Shine North, Woodcut Media, Bob & Co production and it is distributed by Content Media.
